*sigh* for all my nerdy goodness yesterday with the whole getting Linux working, it actually doesn't work very well at all... *sigh* stupid ancient version of Red hat....
nothing i've downloaded feels like installing because it's a) annoyingly stupid or b) missing vital packages and I don't know where to look to find them.
SSSSSSO, I'm going for a trial of Redhat Enterprise (hopefully better than the tv show *giggle*) to see how that goes, and if as good as it claims, will have to make some kind of effort to get a full version....

in the mean time i'm annoyed and but creating a rather pretty looking invitation for my Christmas luncheon in mid November. hopefully I'll have them ready by the weekend and I can start to distribute them....

til next....

uhh, what are you using to try and install stuff using redhat, 'yum' is generally the tool to use.

don't go with redhat enterprise, it's completely unsuitable for a home environment.

ubuntu is another good option if you want something that's easier to install stuff on. there's a great package manager thingy that comes with it.

ooo. thankies muchly... am on a steep learning curve with this whole new OS thingy. will look into this unbuntu you have mentioned.... will also use the trusted and true "Trial and Error" system of learning stuff.... :)

what would be a better suited home OS then? the other thing to note, is the linux system is being set up for Patrick and his programming (he's one of those Fortran users btw), he'd much prefer to use it than XP....

RHEL is great for if you have racks full of servers and you want support contracts and such. It's not designed to be easy to install stuff on and be easy to use.

I use ubuntu at home, fedora core at work. they're both good for programming and desktop stuff. I like ubuntu better.

I also have a CD copy of the latest release of Fedora Core 4 (Fedora being a Red Hat distro). It's exactly what you'd download, assuming you did it that way, but in CD format I think it's much easier to install. If you want to try it, I can get it to Rex or something for you.

Most Newsagents these days will have Linux magazines that will have the latest distros available on the front cover.....

My ISP mirrors most distros locally...if only you had told me you wanted a copy I could have downloaded the latest in a jiffy. Specially since I won't use up my 16 gig quota before I flap OS on Sunday.
